Finally! A community comes together.

Awhile back, Clintus McGintus and I figured out we’re both in the Phoenix metro area and we’ve been trying to get together but our schedules don’t mesh up.

So he emails me and tells me Steve Garfield will be at the Valley Ho at ZuZu’s, and we decide to meet each other and Steve at the same time.

Steve arrives with Carol, and then all these other people recognize them, and ooh la la, we’ve got a party of seven Phoenicians and two Bostonians and it’s a big two hour rap and we’ve all got a bunch of new friends. I had no clue so many people would show up.

Kick ass! And thanks to Steve and Carol for catalyzing Phoenix to come together.

So far I think Clintus made the best video. There’s a bunch of cool photos on Flickr with more to come. And here’s who was there (and their links if they gave ‘em):

me (duh)

Allen and K Weiner

Chris Baker and Tiffany

Clintus McGintus aka Clint Comer

Mignon aka Grammar Girl

and of course Steve and Carol

Good times!

Good news for self-hosting vloggers: Dreamhost has licensed a Flash Media Player and now allows customers to embed audio or video into their web pages without third party hosting. Looks like they’ll convert your media to FLV format for you, too, by allowing you to upload your original format and then fill out a form which initiates transcoding and spits out some HTML for you to paste on your site. They recommend you delete your original video afterward, but real vloggers won’t do that. Instead they’ll provide multiple versions of their videos so their viewers have a choice!

Have a look at Dreamhost’s Flash Image Rotator and Flash Media Player here. They’ve got decent Flash Media Player documentation in their wiki. And signing up for Dreamhost via this link will kick back a referral fee to Node101 Phoenix to help pay for hosting this site.

I photographed my TV screen. You gotta hand it to Bill Moyers – his producers are hip. Blip.tv showed up on this laptop screen for ten seconds about a half hour into the October 18, 2006 airing of Moyers on America: The Net at Risk. Go watch the episode at PBS.org (or go straight to Chapter 3 about 9 minutes 10 seconds in to see the Blip.tv logo on air). And then go tell your U.S. Senator and Representative and the FCC (fcc.gov) to protect Net Neutrality.
